Walkerton Elementary School!
Dr. Fuller's WES Updates!
October 21st, 2022
Hello, WES Families!
Please see below for all of the happenings at Walkerton Elementary!
(NEW) Red Ribbon Week Starts Monday!
Next week is our Red Ribbon Week: A huge thank you to Mr. Stauffer for getting this organized!
We pride ourselves at WES in giving back. Continuing our tradition from last year, we want to give back to those children who need it most: the kids at Riley Children's Hospital.
Next week, if your child would like to participate in any one of the below Red Ribbon theme days, please have them bring $1 to give to their teacher each day. Every dollar that we collect will be donated to Riley's Children Foundation.
Monday: Team Up Against Drugs (Favorite Jersey Day)
Tuesday: Wild About Being Drug Free (Crazy Hair Day)
Wednesday: Choose to be Drug Free (Wear Red)
Thursday: Be Courageous, Say No to Drugs (Dress as Your Hero Day)
Friday: Say Boo to Drugs (Wear Halloween Costumes)
Our goal is to collect $2,500...a lofty goal, but one I know we can achieve. If we meet this goal, Walkerton Elementary will once again have a Red Wagon named in its honor and placed at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis!
To add extra incentive, the winning class will have a pizza party with Dr. Fuller and Mr. Stauffer!
It is an honor for a school to be named a Red Wagon School, as it demonstrates that the school not only cares about academics, but that we care about those around us.
Please join us next week in donating your $1's, and lets work together to meet the goal of becoming a Red Wagon School!
(NEW) Halloween Parties, Costumes, Miller's Merry Manor Next Friday!
Next Friday, October 28th we will be doing a variety of different fun and spooky activities at WES!
First, our students in Grades K-4 will be visiting Miller's Merry Manor! Each class/grade will have a time to visit, and we will have staff outside assisting cross the street. If you do not want your child to participate, please email your child's teacher.
Next Friday we also conclude the end of Red Ribbon Week! For Friday, students pay $1 to wear a Halloween costume!
We encourage our kids to dress up that day, but we do have a few guidelines that we ask be adhered to in order to ensure a fun and safe environment for all students. The following costumes/accessories will NOT be allowed:
- Ghouls, devils, zombies, goblins, and evil witches
- Masks with eyeballs hanging out, or costumes which feature other types of disfigurements (i.e., no blood)
- Any types of weapons (i.e., hatchets, knives, swords, machine guns, handguns, etc.)
- Characters from predominantly violent horror movies or TV shows (Freddy Krueger, Jason, etc.)
- Costumes that violate the school dress code (i.e., mid-drift showing, spaghetti straps, and short skirts/shorts)
We want this to be a fun day for our kids, while not interrupting the educational process. Please help us in assuring that all student costumes are appropriate within those guidelines.
Finally, some teachers will have a Halloween Party on Friday: Parties/activities will no doubt look different from Kindergarten through 6th grade.
If your child's teacher has emailed about having a party and you plan to drop off food/drinks, please do so by 12:00 on Friday.
Thank you so much! We plan on having a blast with our kids next Friday!
(NEW) 2nd Annual Stuff the Bus is BACK!
In the spirit of giving back, this November we are proud to bring back the 2nd Annual Stuff the Bus food drive!
Stuff the Bus is an amazing opportunity for our students to once again give back to our community!
Be on the lookout next week for more details!

Now through November 4th, WES will be collecting gently used winter coats that we can clean and then donate to those in need.

(NEW) Children's Science Workshop!
I am so excited to announce that on November 12, 2022 the WES PTA will be hosting its first annual Children's Science Workshop at the WES cafeteria.
The workshop will feature a wide variety of "hands on" and "watch and see" science demonstrations. At each demonstration station, students will learn to identify variables they could test to turn demonstrations into fun science experiments! Dr. Amy Stark, director of the Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Notre Dame will be our keynote speaker and we will also have special guests from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Zac Mago and Play for Jake Foundations, Siemens Healthcare, and teachers and students from the John Glenn High School Science Department! AND there will be free hot dogs and popcorn!!!
The workshop is from 10 am to 2 pm, but is an open house style so you can come and go as you please. However, we would like a general count so we have enough science supplies and hot dogs, so please let us know if you are coming by emailing me at mariaknowlton@gmail.com or text me at 219-363-6286. The activities are geared for elementary age students, but all are invited to learn (and eat)!
(Reminder) WES Fish Fry is Coming Soon!
On Friday, November 4th, bring those appetites, as our WES Staff along with Tyner Odd Fellows will be serving up Fish Fry dinners starting at 4:00!
Get in line early, as it is first come first serve! Please click HERE for more information.
Learning to Read is Fun at WES!
(Reminder) Leaves are Falling, and It is Getting Cold!
Fall came full force this week, as we saw the temperature drop to 39 degrees at 7:45 in the morning!
As the weather begins to change, please remind your children that their clothes need to change as well. Coats, shoes, hats, gloves, etc. may be needed sooner rather than later.
If you need assistance in providing any type of clothing, please email Dr. Fuller at pfuller@jgsc.k12.in.us
Similarly, as the rain (and God forbid snow) begins to fall, please remember to keep it slow in the parking lot, both in the morning and afternoon. We have a lot of very excited kids eager to both come to school and go home from school, and we want to make sure we are keeping them as safe as possible.

Dr. Fuller's Thoughts!
Do you ever have those moments where you know you need to get something done but you find it difficult to get started?
Whether it is cleaning the gutters, mowing the lawn, a task given to you by your boss, or a talk you need to have with your child...there are always things that we don't want to do, but we know we must.
What's funny is.... we sort of give ourselves false hope, right?
We don't say "I'm never going to clean the gutters"...instead, we say "I'll just clean the gutters tomorrow"
We convince ourselves that it will just be one more day...which turns to two days...then a week....now a month....and then the snow has hit and your gutters are still clogged.
The best thing we can do is know that taking that one small step means we are that much closer to accomplishing your goal.
Every morning, I create a list for what needs done that day: That lists changes...ALOT...with items being added throughout the day.
However, having a list and more importantly CHECKING ITEMS OFF THAT LIST is so impactful. Once those items are checked off, you feel an immense sense of accomplishment.
The next time you find yourself stuck...make a list. Whether on a whiteboard or a piece of paper, making a list and crossing off those items on that list will make you feel beyond proud of yourself.
This is a great habit to teach our kids, as well. Whether it is homework, chores, or sports...magically, that list of items WILL ACTUALLY GET DONE when they are written down.
Keep your head up...move your feet...and write down that list!
