John Glenn High School Students Earn Writing Awards
Awards go out each January to young writers from the area. In December students from John
Glenn High School submitted their works to Scholastic in several categories for writing,
including the senior portfolio. Judges evaluated the work for personal voice/vision, technical
skill, and originality. On January 18 the advisor for the Advanced Composition students was
notified that five students received a dozen awards out of over 1,200 submissions in the Northeast
IN/Northwest OH Region: two Gold Keys, which will now compete in the national contest, five
Silver Keys, and five Honorable Mention. The students will be recognized at the St. Francis
Performing Arts Center, on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Tiffany McCoige’s Gold Key portfolio
is one of only 15 recognized in the region. If she receives a national award, she would be invited
to Carnegie Hall in New York City in June. Notifications for national winners will come in
The winners are as follows:
Alexa Allen: Honorable Mention Short Story; Gold Key Poetry
Tristan Carrasco: Silver Key Dramatic Script; Honorable Mention Short Story
Victoria Krause: Silver Keys Poetry and Flash Fiction; Honorable Mention Flash Fiction and
Tiffany McCoige: Gold Key Senior Portfolio; Honorable Mention Dramatic Script
Mia Santiago: Silver Keys Humor and Personal Essay/Memoir
Many of these works will be printed in the 2018 edition of Aerial, John Glenn’s Literary and Art
Magazine, which will be available in late March. The staff from last year’s magazine found out
on January 16 that they received a rank of Recommended for Highest Award from the 2017
National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in the Program to Recognize Excellence in
Student Literary Magazines (PRESLM). There were 372 entries with only 26 Highest Award
recipients nationwide. Student Editors included Kearstyn Lamphier, Mikayla Jackson, and Lois
Simon (2017 John Glenn graduates). The staff included Alexa Allen, Nathaniel Blodgett, Hannah
Bostic (2017 graduate), Stephen Bowers, Tiffany McCoige, Samantha Pranger, Mia Santiago, and
Conner Wenger. The Faculty Advisor for the Advanced Composition course is Mrs. Julie Parent.
John Glenn Students Win Two National Silver Medal
Senior Mia Santiago won a Gold Keys and three Silver Keys at Scholastics. “Molotov Cocktail,” a stylized oil painting, was Mia’s Gold Keys. This beautifully textured piece won Mia the Silver Medal at Nationals.
Sophmore Salem Slater received a gold key at Scholastics for her beautiful detailed charcoal drawing, “Reptilian toes.” This piece went on to receive a Silver Medal at nationals.
Titan Challenge 2018
Eleven Economics students competed in the annual "Junior Achievement Titan Challenge" that included teams from Penn, Riley, Clay, and Culver. The team of Ashley Jones, Mason Lang, and Tiffany McCoige were the overall winners of the competition. Their first place finish also qualifies them to compete in the online national contest. Congratulations to all students who participated.
